Dear Friends,
Just read that when Emerson wrote “On Self Reliance” he was supported and cared for in his daily life by his wife, mother-in-law, three servants, and a gardener — and the wealth he inherited from his first wife. His thoughts were carefully cultivated by his good friends and great books. I wonder what self-reliant thanks he would offer and to whom?
I am so grateful for Emerson’s ideals, but also grateful to see them in the context of his real life dependencies.
Thank you for being my context, my support, my carers and my cultivators. Even if you only read an occasional email, your name on my list keeps me inspired and active.
I couldn’t be me without you!!
Much love and gratitude,
Lynn
I’ve also been told that while Thoreau lived on Walden Pond, his mother came regularly to do his laundry. Funny things we are!
